GETTING OUTSIDE IN CAVE CREEK Why You Should Hike Black Mountain Trail

If you’re in Cave Creek and the sun is shining (which, let’s be honest, it usually is), and you’re itching to get outside and stretch your legs, let me point you in the direction of one of our town’s most rewarding outdoor gems: Black Mountain Trail.

This hike isn’t just a walk in the park—it’s a true Arizona climb, packed with stunning views, desert wildlife, and that satisfying “I really did something today” feeling.

The Trail: Quick Facts

  • Trailhead: Off Schoolhouse Rd (look for the small gravel lot)
  • Distance: Just over 2 miles round trip
  • Elevation Gain: ~1,200 feet
  • Time: 1.5–2 hours
  • Difficulty: Challenging—but totally doable if you pace yourself

A Local Favorite for a Reason

This hike is short and steep—Black Mountain doesn’t mess around. But that’s part of its charm. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or someone just looking to mix up your morning routine, this trail offers something special. It’s the kind of hike where you’ll see locals out training for bigger climbs, weekend adventurers snapping summit selfies, and maybe even a few brave dogs leading the way.

The views? Unreal. From the top, you can see across the whole valley: Cave Creek, Carefree, North Scottsdale, and beyond. On a clear day, you’ll even catch a glimpse of the Four Peaks off in the distance.

Best Time to Go

Early morning is your best bet—especially in the warmer months. There’s very little shade, and once that sun gets up, it gets toasty. If you’re visiting during winter or spring, the cooler temps make it even more enjoyable.

What to Bring

  • Good hiking shoes (it gets rocky and steep)
  • Plenty of water (seriously, don’t skimp)
  • Sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen)
  • A camera or phone for those summit shots

Bonus: It’s Dog-Friendly

If your pup is up for a rugged climb, they’re welcome on the trail (just keep them leashed). Just remember—it’s rocky and exposed, so bring water for them too, and maybe some booties for the rougher terrain.

Make It a Morning Out

One of my favorite ways to enjoy a Cave Creek morning is hitting the trail early and then grabbing breakfast at Local Jonny’s or Grotto Café afterward. There’s nothing like sipping coffee with sore legs and a view of the mountain you just conquered.

If you have guests in town and you want to show them a real slice of Arizona, take them on this hike. Then walk them through the shops on Cave Creek Road, grab lunch, and let them soak in what makes our town so special.
